Our sweet tooth can barely handle the anticipation of this weeks chocolate and wine tasting! Let’s be honest, after the last week that we have had in the Carolinas with Hurrican Florence, we could use a big ol dose of sweetness and this is why we’re looking forward to spending some time with Jessica of Chocolate Monkey this Thursday! This girl knows her decadent desserts! We love how much time she’s dedicated to living a life filled with chocolate- SWOON!

What made you want to teach a chocolate-tasting workshop?
I love to share good chocolate with people! I would bring 100 samples if I could. Since these products aren’t readily available (some are at the high-end grocery stores or cooking stores) most people have no idea they even exist. Tasting a mass produced chocolate bar full of fillers and chemicals next to an artisan bar that is only cacao and sugar is very eye-opening for most people. And even among people who seek out quality chocolate, tasting a bar that tastes like orange and nutmeg next to one that taste like fig and raspberry really highlights how origin plays into flavor. The flavors of chocolate are as varied as the flavors of wine and are amazing. I could go on but I think you get the idea- I just really love chocolate and am an educator at heart.
When/how did you discover your passion for craft chocolate?
When I started learning about craft chocolate myself while living in Portland- I went to about 10 chocolate festivals in 2008- and kept a notebook of everything I learned. Then I went to every chocolate shop in Portland….I’ve been seeking out good chocolate ever since. I’ve been to all the chocolate shops in Charlotte and am sad there is no big Chocolate festival…maybe I can start one a couple of years down the road :).
Tell us some fun things about yourself!
I have lived an exciting life, I’ve worked with tigers, bats and monkeys. I’ve climbed snow-capped mountains. I’ve skydived, hang-glided and flown a glider plane. I have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience (I’ve published several journal articles). I drove across the United States over a 3 month period visiting national parks- by myself 🙂 But right now I’m just mom to a sweet and crazy toddler who is my world ❤
Raise your hand if you’d like Jessica to start a Charlotte chocolate festival?! Girl we are there!
